📌 Wary allies show there’s no quick fix to Trump’s Iran crisis
President Donald Trump’s call for NATO allies to help secure the Strait of Hormuz has triggered broad criticism, as many European governments view NATO as a defensive alliance, not one meant to follow a member into a war of choice. While European capitals recognize the urgent need to reopen the strait and contain the economic fallout, countries such as Germany remain reluctant to engage militarily. The available options are also highly complex, given limited mine-clearing capacity and the difficulty of protecting shipping from Iranian threats by sea, air, and missile systems. As a result, de-escalation and diplomacy remain the preferred path, despite the absence of a workable multinational plan so far.

📌 US considers naval escorts in Hormuz despite major risks
The United States is considering naval escorts in the Strait of Hormuz to protect shipping and partially restore traffic through the chokepoint, but experts warn the mission would be extremely risky and could fail badly. The narrow waterway, combined with nearby Iranian missiles, drones, mines, and fast boats, makes escort operations highly complex. Even if successful, the effort may restore only about 10% of pre-war traffic. Analysts also doubt the US Navy could sustain such a mission alone over time, which explains Washington’s push for allied contributions to any future maritime security operation.

📌 Zelenskiy says Ukraine wants funding and technology for Middle East drone help
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Ukraine wants funding and technology transfers in return for helping Middle Eastern countries defend against Iranian kamikaze drones. Kyiv has already sent expert teams to Qatar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and a US base in Jordan to assess defenses and advise on counter-drone measures. He stressed that Ukraine is not participating in combat operations against Iran, but is open to longer-term defense arrangements. Zelenskiy also warned that a prolonged Middle East war could divert US attention and air-defense supplies away from Ukraine and delay future peace talks with Russia.
