📌 China Finds Bigger Role as U.S. Skips Brazil Climate Summit
With the United States absent from COP30 in Belem, Brazil, China has stepped into the center of global climate diplomacy. Its large pavilion, prominent clean energy executives, and active diplomatic engagement now occupy roles once led by Washington. China’s dominance in renewable energy and electric vehicles is strengthening its leverage in climate talks, especially after President Trump withdrew from the Paris Agreement and declined to send a high-level U.S. delegation. Critics warn that this strategic retreat risks leaving the U.S. far behind as China rapidly expands its green industries and supply chains.
📌 U.N. Says Israeli Wall Crosses Lebanon Border
A recent UNIFIL survey concluded that a concrete wall built by the Israeli military has crossed the U.N.-mapped Blue Line, rendering more than 4,000 square meters of Lebanese territory inaccessible to local residents. Another wall section under construction near Yaroun has also reportedly crossed the boundary. UNIFIL informed the Israeli army and requested the wall’s removal, stressing that Israeli presence and construction on Lebanese land violate U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701 and Lebanon’s sovereignty. The Israeli military denied the violation, saying the wall is part of a broader project to reinforce the northern border barrier.
📌 Nearly Two Dozen Arrested as Faith Leaders Protest at Chicago-Area ICE Facility
Faith leaders and activists held a protest outside a federal ICE processing center in Broadview, Illinois, where 21 people — including pastor Michael Woolf — were arrested, underscoring rising tensions over President Trump’s hardline immigration policy. The facility has become a focal point for local opposition as Chicago limits cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. Since September, demonstrations have repeatedly led to clashes, with officers using tear gas and other less-lethal munitions. In a related ruling, a federal judge ordered the release of 13 ICE detainees after finding the agency violated a 2022 agreement restricting warrantless arrests and traffic-stop pretexts.
